What GA pilots need to know before Super Bowl LVIII

The FAA tells General Aviation pilots to be prepared for the upcoming changes surrounding the Super Bowl LVIII. Pilots flying near Las Vegas from Feb. 7-12 should be aware of the temporary flight restrictions and special air traffic procedures issued for the busy weekend.

A NOTAM will be issued later in January about the procedures for the game, along with specific arrival and departure route requirements. Other pertinent information about Las Vegas-area airports and airspace is available on the FAA’s Super Bowl webpage, which will be updated as the game approaches and more information becomes available. There will be special air traffic procedures to minimize delays and ensure safety at Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), North Las Vegas Airport (VGT), Henderson Executive Airport (HND) and Boulder City Airport (BVU). A reservation program will be in place to facilitate aircraft parking at the same airports.

Pilots should familiarize themselves with many of the nearby airports through the FAA’s From the Flight Deck video series. The videos will show pilots real runway approaches and airport taxi footage, along with diagrams and visual graphics to identify hot spots and safety-sensitive items.

The FAA will publish a Temporary Flight Restriction for Super Bowl LVIII centered on Allegiant Stadium. The FAA is expecting the TFR to be active from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, Feb. 11. The TFR will have a 10-nautical-mile inner core and a 30-nautical-mile outer ring. The game will begin at about 3:30 p.m. local time. The FAA said the TFR will not impact any regularly scheduled commercial flights in and out of LAS. Emergency medical, public safety and military aircraft are able to enter the TFR in coordination with air traffic control.

Super Bowl LVIII is a no-drone zone. The game is a designated National Security Special Event and additional unmanned aircraft restrictions will be in place before, during and after the game. More information will be released closer to the event.
